Why democratic socialism is evil?
In the 50th there was conducted an experiment in the USA. The administration has built a magnificent town; the housing was given to the beggars for free. What was the result – read the article to learn. Democratic socialism in action. Why beggars should not be given free housing. Stop democratic socialism!
Democratic socialism is able to bring any country to collapse.
A person must have its own home – this idea is hardly original. Even ancient Athens dwellers were trying to resolve problem with beggars’ settlement – and to be fair it should be noted that since those times the problem has not been resolved. Only in the 20th century, when Europe and the world were swept over by so called democratic socialism most of the countries fixed in their Constitutions right of every citizen to housing. The implementation of this right – is a separate conversation. It demonstrated mistakes, curiosities and outright miscalculations.
The first who began to build housing for the beggars at the state expense massively was the USA, when ruling elite of the country was captivated by socialism. Similar programs started in this country in the 19th century, but they fully got down to business only after the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s «New Deal» focused special attention on social housing construction. The first few hundred thousand «square meters» of social houses were provided to the beggars already in the 1930s. The rent for such housing was symbolic.
It is worth noting that social housing was very attractive. It was a series of single-family small cottages for 3-4 rooms, with bathroom and all utilities, even with a yard and a backyard. The cost of housing was dirt cheap. To be eligible for such housing, it was necessary to prove their absolute desperate poverty. One can only imagine how jealous of beggars low-paid workers were – they turned to be too RICH to be eligible for social housing. The result was controversial: a simple miner had to pay a significant amount for rent of poor cramped apartment, instead of unemployed who lived in a cozy cottage (and some say that democratic socialism is fair).
Democratic socialism was thought by evil genius.
This went on still for a long time: social housing in the USA was much more comfortable than other residential real estate. Naturally, over the years it became clear that it’s not enough cottages to provide with housing all the beggars. Therefore, in the early 50s, when so called democratic socialism was spreading the world, the US administration decided to abandon building of townhouses and cottages. Construction of large residential complexes began – whole area with complete infrastructure: shops, hospitals, schools. The basis of areas became high-altitude houses with affordable apartments – exactly there unemployed and the beggars from the slums were resettled. One of the most famous areas was «Pruitt-Igoe», built in St. Louis, Missouri.
Its grand opening took place in 1954. 33 apartment blocks with 11 floors each with green lawns laid out around were waiting for the new roomers. Each block had comfortable and well-equipped apartments. Functions of the project chief architect were performed by a promising young specialist Minoru Yamasaki. In this work he was guided by the principles of Le Corbusier: comfort, functionality, modern approach.
The first floors of blocks were designed to meet the common needs: there were placed closets, storages for bicycles, laundries. On each floor the architect has provided a broad and long gallery, which, by author’s design, was made for a comfortable communicating roomer’s communication. It was expected that there parties will be kept; children will play in nasty weather. Everything as socialism promises.
On the eve of project launch they have made first steps towards tolerance in Missouri: cohabitation of black and white was allowed. The new complex had to become a symbol of unity, tolerance and prosperity for all Americans. Area name «Pruitt-Igoe» – is dedication to the black pilot Oliver Pruitt (hero of the World War II) and white member of Congress from Missouri William Igoe.
Expulsion from socialism paradise
Balzac once wrote: «Poverty is contagious» but those words were unknown to the authors of an ambitious social project – or they thought of them too flippantly. Traditional American society was already filled with leftist ideas at that time. All of «progressive» people considered democratic socialism to be the next evolutionary step of humanity. Many educated Americans supposed: poor man is a victim of unprincipled capitalism world. The society re-mastered for itself the simple truth: feed someone who is hungry, shelter the one who does not have a roof over their heads. The right approach, isn’t it?
The 20th century was century of global social transformations, and its history has shown: these wonderful simple truths should be implemented only after comprehensive thinking. Once single mothers, poor old ladies, students from poor families and many other beggars settled in the new apartments of «Pruitt-Igoe» complex, a lot of unpleasant facts have shown itself. It turned out that the unemployed alcoholics and single mothers sometimes nurture full marginal elements, and old women better go to live to almshouse than will share their shelter with half crazed son drinkers. Female students did not really like the risk to be raped directly in the elevator, and male students did not want to lose their teeth, having found themselves in another fight in the front door.
The whites left their apartments during the first years. Almost 99% of the population of the complex was blacks. At the same time educated and working African Americans also preferred not to stay at a new place: they disliked possibility to become the next victim of endless gangland slams. Two schools in the residential complex territory were abandoned by all self-respecting teachers very quickly. There were only those who were able to stand openly masturbating or drunken students during classes.
Turning to hell
It turned out that not all modern beggars are victims of circumstances. In most cases – they are marginal persons, unwilling to work and follow the precepts of decency, respect rights of other people. Living dispersed among more or less successful people, the beggars unwillingly, but adapt to the surrounding reality, comply with the laws, sometimes even bring a certain social benefit. But having found themselves in a society of their own kind, they have completely lost their minds. To create a great quarter, consisting of marginal elements, was openly a stupid decision.
A few months were enough to turn complex into a «state» consisting of criminals and personalities sank to the bottom of society. They lived here «by the rules of the underworld», took working people as goners, and crazy criminals as authorities. Democratic socialism in action. After 5 years, only 15% of apartment owners paid minimum payment required for water supply and electricity, garbage collection, basic repair works. After 5 years more, the number of taxpayers was reduced to 2%.
Social paradise turned into a ghetto – and one of the most terrible in the USA. Architectural novelty – the gallery – became a place of mass fights. Teenage gangs were literally living in the galleries. Light was absent: even if the utility dared to fix bulbs, they were broken from the first few minutes. While elevators still went, they were becoming places of gang rapes – mockery of the poor victims sometimes lasted for hours, and cries of the girls echoed through the block.
The police went on calls only during daytime: all stations have officially abandoned night calls, being afraid of losing people. Only in rare cases SWAT went to assault one of the blocks – if it was possible to «cover» the whole gang as a whole. During daytime the roomers with low prestige in this terrible criminal world could still go out. At night it was similar to death. Democratic socialism lived on a single area.
Inglorious end and severe consequences
Exactly during existence of this residential neighborhood St. Louis became one of three most dangerous cities in the USA (and it is still there). In the mid 60s once beautiful residential area has turned into perfect place to shoot a horror movie: broken windows on the facades, piles of garbage (yardmen haven’t served complex for several years already), obscene graffiti everywhere, dark corridors (at most – dimly lighted by lanterns, protected by a metal grid). In this area 75% of drugs trafficking from all city accumulated, so twisted bodies in front doors were absolutely usual thing: somebody’s on drugs, and somebody’s long dead.
Even prostitutes did not like this area – it was too dangerous for them to work. According to statistics, every third roomer of complex was engaged into prostitution, but they went working to respectable areas of the city. Police statistics has another interesting fact: every second «Pruitt-Igoe» was tried. But socialism tells us that thieves and murderers are «socially close members of the society».
The area exuded stench: it only intensified after sewer break in one of the blocks: the building was then flooded with sewage from basement to the roof. The creator of «Pruitt-Igoe» has crossed out this quarter of his resume long time ago, though once he believed the project would make him world-famous. It was difficult for him to admit that he became one of the hell creators – or rather its full-fledged branch on the earth. In 1970, the residential complex was formally recognized a disaster area. And here it was much worse than during flood, tornado or fire. The city administration has recognized no decision about salvation of area and its residents effective.
Most communications were destroyed and continued to destroy, and taking into account the abovementioned features no one was going to fix. Authorities came to the only acceptable way out. They began to resettle residents: latest were sent to another social housing, which was small houses in disadvantaged areas. After eviction a joint military and police raid began: homeless and drug addicts were caught in empty blocks. After clean-up the block was cordoned off and blew up.
Two years later, the area was a series of pits, full of demolition waste over which they hastily sowed grass and wildflowers. City authority still resolves problem with residents of former housing complex: they are thousands of murderers and dozens of gangs. They are thugs who got accustomed to live in a hostile world from childhood, and have not adapted to other conditions. Democratic socialism in action failed to come up to its expectations.
The problem of this and other areas has forced all leftist ideas bearers to think about their actions correctness. It turns out that money and goods are not able to improve the existence of people who are thrown out to the edge of life for a variety of reasons. Even free and compulsory education is not able to resolve the problem. Only constant pressure of cultural paradigm bearers can exterminate spirit of the slums – but to achieve efficiency in this case, a few generations need to be changed.
